Stoichiometric Ecotoxicology for a Multisubstance World

چکیده
Abstract Nutritional and contaminant stressors influence organismal physiology, trophic interactions, community structure, ecosystem-level processes; however, the interactions between toxicity elemental imbalance in food resources have been examined only a few ecotoxicity studies. Integrating well-developed ecological theories that cross all levels of biological organization can enhance our understanding ecotoxicology. In present article, we underline opportunity to couple concepts approaches used theory stoichiometry (ES) ask ecotoxicological questions introduce stoichiometric ecotoxicology, subfield ecology examines how stress, nutrient supply, constraints interact throughout organization. This conceptual framework unifying ecotoxicology with ES offers potential for both empirical theoretical studies deepen mechanistic adverse outcomes chemicals across scales improve predictive powers

Fish models for ecotoxicology
1. Laboratory models Fish laboratory models covering different parts of the life cycle and different routes of exposure are continuously developed and modified in order to meet new challenges. The most important exposure routes are by injection, trough contaminated water or feed [1]. For laboratory studies zebrafish (Danio rerio), medaka (Oryzias latipes), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) a...
متن کاملComparing chemical fingerprints for ecotoxicology
We present a comparison between 14 chemical fingerprints using 1D/2D features and PMCSFG, a data mining method that induces features based on maximum common subgraphs. We provide an experimental evaluation and discuss the usefulness of the different methods on ecotoxicology data. The features generated by data mining yield a similar performance for predicting toxicity, while they are more inter...
متن کاملEthics in science: ecotoxicology
Predictive ecotoxicology emphasizes the probable environmental outcome of exposure to toxics, rather than the mere appraisal of existing damage, and in so doing raises some complex but interesting ethical issues. Awareness of endocrine-disrupting chemicals is blurring the line between humankind and other life forms in toxicity testing by providing evidence that both humans and wildlife suffer a...
متن کاملToward a stoichiometric framework for evolutionary biology
Ecological stoichiometry, the study of the balance of energy and materials in living systems, may serve as a useful synthetic framework for evolutionary biology. Here, we review recent work that illustrates the power of a stoichiometric approach to evolution across multiple scales, and then point to important open questions that may chart the way forward in this new field. At the molecular leve...
